You might remember my post about the tiny Japanese Coca Cola, well I guess I’d call this one a huge size here in Japan. Mai (my fiancee) and I were eating at a crepes shop a few days back and we noticed this display with a different looking large size container. It’s about the size of a 32oz in the U.S. (or 950ml?) but here it’s shaped as a half cup + half milk carton monster with a hole for a long straw. I’ve never seen anything like this before, and Mai said this is the first time she’s seen this in Japan so it’s not the ‘norm’
With all the tiny cute coffees around I wonder if my eyes are deceiving me and it is actually a 24oz cup. I guess I’ll never know unless I buy one, bring it home, and measure it which probably won’t be happening.
Yeah - I’ve seen them before, but usually at sporting events, and only maybe once or twice in Japan. I bet it’s purely a novelty item, though. It’s probably more gawked at than it is appreciated for non-tiny volume.

I don’t know too many gaijin that could take that much soda all at once, let alone any native Japanese people. Where did you see this?
Deas - So they’re in more than one place? That’s good to know, and I’m glad it’s not normal. I’d feel a little bit odd being one of the only ones drinking this huge oddity while people stare. And I’d think the regular shaped cups with lids would work a lot better.
Jason - Yeah pretty big! I’d think you can share a regular shaped cup too. Maybe the way it’s shaped is some type of marketing scheme so people notice it. I saw it at a crepes shop near Tenjin in Fukuoka. Deas said they’re at sporting events too. I don’t know if this is surprising but in the U.S. there are huge, almost 2 liters (64 oz), sodas sold in huge tall cups at convenience stores that cost about $1 (or 107 yen). Talk about a ton of caffeine and empty calories!
That’s pretty standard in Hawaii. When I took some kids for a homestay last year it blew their minds!!

Yeah, All the fast food chains and 7-11 offer 1.9liter 64 oz drinks. It goes down fast in the Hawaiian sun!!
No problem Chris, and you mean the large size drinks in general? I thought you meant the unique looking cups. You know, I do miss the huge 64oz fountain Gatorade for about $1 (vs. the $2 32oz bottled version). That’s a great tool to have after a night of heavy drinking or even hitting the gym.
well all the Japanese people I know refer to the US sized small drinks as “buckets”….so that may well be a US small or medium?? Is that only where you are? I havent seen any around here… btw…my friend got me a “regular sized” coffee mug from the premiere starbucks in seattle… that cup takes up half our kitchen! LOL
LOL! I can imagine the mug now Jyankee, that’s funny stuff. I bet it’s huge! I have a Starbucks thermal mug and it barely fits in our cupboard. 1mm longer and it would be a no go. As for the drink, ti looks like ‘bucket’ to me. Things that are small seem much bigger now for some reason, and big things seem really huge. And that’s the only one I’ve seen so far.
7-11 used to sell this same cup they called it the Double Gulp. For like a buck you would get 64oz of soda. We used to stop at 7-11 when I was younger on road trips and my dad would buy one for me and one for my brother.
I think he did it on purpose just to see how long we could hold out before our bladders exploded.
Tom - I know exactly what you’re talking about. They’re huge and I can’t imagine the pain you guys where in, haha! Can’t beat $1 for 64oz of Gatorade though.
I can usually pound down 1 liter (33.8 US Ounces) of soda a day. For the Japanese this would most likely last them a week. It costs me about 2 bucks from the gas station (I don’t like fountain).
Sometimes I do get fountain and 1.25 liter (44 ounce) costs about 1.50. But I live in California. It almost as expensive as Japan!
