I went hiking with a friend of mine recently. We rode our bikes about an hour to the east side of Fukuoka and hiked to the top of a mountain. I took just a few pictures, but recorded a lot more (which I don’t have online). It’s called Tachibanaiyama or Touchybunny or something, I don’t remember, but the top has an amazing view of city of Fukuoka Japan.

  1. Great finds! I am a nature lover myself; here in Nagano we have wonderful scenery as well. Don’t you find the dichotomy between city and nature quite intriguing? Japan is a country of great contrasts and those pictures are prove of it.

Sounds like some great scenery and a nice hike! Did you see any “touchy bunnies”???? LOL

  3. Nomadic Matt says:

Looks like a swell place to hike!

Yoshihiro – It’s surely amazing. Especially when the city runs right up to the mountain but just a few minutes later in your in a completely different setting.

Jyankee – I saw no bunnys, but I did see about 3 snakes on the trail. I didn’t touch them though, haha!

Nomadic Matt – For sure. I went with a friend who recently hiked Fuji to see the sunrise. I think that’s got to be the #1 hiking experience in Japan.

Sounds like a great trip. One of my close friends is from Fukaoka and he really enjoys it.

You are keeping a very helpful blog for people interested in Japan, so please keep up the good work. I recently moved from Tokyo to Miyakojima myself. If you get a chance please check out my site: http://www.simplisticthoughts.com. I have several posts on Japan myself.

    Keep up the good work

    Nick

  6. It just looks so wonderful. I have not hiked in a while. I probably need to because osmetimes it is good to get disconnected from the city

Freaking Right! I was planning on doing some hiking in the Tokyo area of the country myself! Maybe in Nikko next week. Maybe Fuji area in a few weeks. Maybe down Kyoto area next month. I will be sure to leave some pics on my blog and let you know.

I love nature. It is such a refreshing thing to experience when being in the city for too long. Yup, there is nothing like a nice day trip hiking in mountains…

HEEEEEELLLLLLOOOOOOOOOO! Anybody home!?!?!?! No posts in a while, I really hate it when my favorite blogs do this. They just suddenly stop posting forever. Apparently you don’t care about your readers, or you would’ve posted within a MONTH! Jeez!

Hey! I’m also a foreigner living in Japan (in Takayama, considerably less metropolitan than Fukuoka). I really love it here (I’ve been here almost a year now, and I love your site because it’s so positive. A lot of other foreigner-in-Japan sites seem to be based on cynical observations of what sucks about living here, but your blog is refreshingly optimistic and enjoyable to read. I feel so blessed to be in this beautiful country, and I’ve had an awesome experience both with people (who are generally amusing) and with Japan as a whole, so it’s nice to find a blog that shares (seems to share?) my opinion that living in Japan is great!

  20. Hen says:

Hmmm, I take back that offer. Sry, too sloooooooooooooooow. Way too slow. U haven’t posted since November. Seriously tho, if myy old blog would have had a single person to complain when I stopped posting, I wouldn’t have. :-(

  21. orion says:

well i live in Neyagawa Japan and a few days ago we had a slight earth quake. Theres ya japanese fill guys. “You owe me Steve”

  22. Em in NOLA says:

You got married and stopped blogging. That’s all there is to it, right?

  23. Steve says:

@orion: LOL! I’ll do my best!

@Hen: Save your $1, something is in the works… maybe.

@Allie: Thanks for the kind words.

    @orion: Thanks!

@Em in NOLA: Not exactly. I just stopped for a while.

Found your blog while doing some research for my son who was going to Tokyo for his junior spring semester. He is actually there now having arrived Monday. I had read all of your blog, looking to understand better the city and see if I could learn a bit about what he was going to experience thru your writing and pictures. I found it FASCINATING and INFORMATIVE!
Then I realized you had stopped writing in October and had no idea all this drama was in play! WOW.
Quite happy to see that you have made an epiphany of sorts and look forward to reading your blog in the future, it’s well written and full of the little things I wanted to fill him in on about…..best to you.

  25. Wayne from Oz says:

Steve – Thanks for making the time & effort to write this stuff and to bring people together.

Partner & I are off soon for the land of the rising yen and just trying to sort where we will travel to & look at. Starting from Kyushu & working our way back to Tokyo before flying home. We’ve decided on a simple of theme of hot spas & Ryokans, something Japan has plenty of …. so I should get that right.

But I like your Japan hiking pics and may now factor in a bike ride & some hiking around Kabouchizawa. Any tips or advice on good bike rides around Nagasaki?
