I took United Airlines for my flight to Japan. I highly recommend them because of customer service and comfort. This was my first time taking this airline and it was my first choice because at the time it was the least expensive option. I’ve flown a few other airlines so I thought I’d give you a breakdown of what I thought of each one. I’ll rate each one on a 5 point scale overall based on my experiences. 1 being poor, 5 being excellent.

Airline Review

United Airlines – My rating: 5/5
I’ve flown with this airline one time.
Exit row gave me tons of leg room. Personal TV screen to watch movies was nice. Adjustable head rest was awesome! I was comfortable. I was not bored. Flight attendants were curtius and helpful. The ticket counter was friendly as well. Food was okay.

US Airways – My rating: 4/5
I’ve flown with this airline a few times.
Overall decent. First class seats are great. Leather, lots of room. Friendly staff.

Northwest Airlines – My rating: 3/5
I’ve flown with this airline many many times.
Customer service is nice, but the seats are pretty ghetto. Fabric is usually busted up, feels like you’re on a plane they never clean or update. First class is basically the busted up economy class with more leg room. It’s better to save the money and get an economy exit row seat. They’ve always been on time for me though which is nice. The international flight from Thailand sucked because you’re stuck in a busted up seat for hours.

ATA Airlines -My rating: 3/5
I’ve flown with this airline a few times.
Cheap as hell! Same satisfaction as NWA but a fraction of the cost!

Frontier Airlines – My rating: 3/5
I’ve flown with this airline once.
Average. Comparable to ATA Airlines.

Southwest Airlines -My rating:2/5
I’ve flown with this airline a few times.
Flight attendents are a bit strange and too talkative when I take this ariline (which is way early or way late in the day). Also about 50% of the time there are some drunk obnoxious passengers that get out of control with yelling and screaming and having a good time.

I flew United when i went to Japan. And I have to give it a 5/5. The flight was really nice and smooth the whole way. everyone was so nice. even when everyone else was asleep i happen to wake up and was soooo thirsty, so first made my way to the rest room and when i got out there was a flight attendant and he was like are you thirsty? i was like snap esp! lol but they were so nice. will fly with them again plus racked up 15,000 miles sooo yeah. def recommend united. and JAL. haven’t flown on JAL but hear incredible things about them as well from friends.

Wow! Never in my life have I heard of any US carrier getting such high marks. I can see you have only flown with them thusfar, but can tell you when you make the change, you will never do it again. Once you fly Lufthansa, Swiss, or Singapore, you will never look back. The things that they cut from US carriers just to save a dollar really stand out when you fly a good airline. I want to see your “I have seen the light” blog afterwards! Flying to Tokyo w/Singapore in March-first time to japan but have a round trip ticket. Love the site!!

Completely agree with Krista, Lufthansa is an awesome airline. Swiss is owned by them by the way. Other great airlines are KLM, and especially Arab airlines like Etihad or Emirates are incredible. Compared to these, American airlines really lag behind. The worst experiences I’ve ever had though was with Air France. I’ve flown with them twice, and never will again if I can avoid it. Both times there were massive screwups, once they even booked me on a connecting flight that didn’t even exist!

Cool blog by the way, I wish I was in Japan.

I heard Singapore is pretty sweet. I’ll keep Lufthansa and Swiss in mind for the future. The last year I’ve been using Air Asia to travel around SE Asia. It’s not expensive, but you’re packed in the plane and there’s no added service. Not bad for a 2-3 hour flight though.
