When we first moved to Fukuoka we stopped by Costco with some friends. One of the items I bought was 9 pounds (4.08 kg) of Quaker Oats which I eat for breakfast a lot. I ran out this week but luckily we went to Costco a few weeks ago and I grabbed another box. Sure you can buy these online at a few places in Japan but it costs an additional 500-700 Yen for the box. Buying direct from Costco costs around 1200 Yen for this box. Anyway, it’s huge. The box is huge, the amount of Oatmeal is insane, and I say this because I’m more adjusted to smaller things and less quantity. I thought I’d share some pictures so you can see what it’s like.
Here are the directions. As you can see there are instructions for food service preparation and the two bags come to a combined total of 102 servings.
Here’s the box with the 2 bags of Oatmeal that was inside.
Here’s are some details.
This is after I filled up my small container that lasts about 2 months. Now I’m good to go!

I’ve always been really interested in what Costco is like in Japan. Do they have Japanese translations for all of the products you can buy there?
Mike,
I found your blog while searching for “oatmeal japan”. I’ve been to that Costco in Fukuoka because my uncle lives there, but I live in Tokyo and can’t find oatmeal at a reasonable price, and even on-line what I’Ve found is expensive. Last month I dragged a suitcase full of oatmeal and other organic grains back with me from a short trip to the States. Any advice on on-line shopping?
Nice posting by the way.
Gary
Mike - It’s about the same as the U.S. with a lot of the same products, some things are missing or are in less quantity, and there are extra food that fits a Japanese diet. Each item has a sticker on it written in Japanese.
Gary - Hi, I’m Steve and this is my blog. Oatmeal is more expensive in Japan than it is in the U.S. most likely due to supply and demand. I found it cheapest at Costco and the other option is ordering online. If it’s too expensive you could always change your diet. I eat it because I like it and I had access to Costco a few times. To order online I suggest checking out the Foreign Buyers Club website.
I started shopping at Costco21 online and the thing has saved my life!! I have Huge parties and Costco keeps the Cost down.
FBC takes weeks for delivery while they wait for enough orders to make a wholesale purchase themselves (how they make money) I used them 2x but I think C21 pwns them all the way around.
I don’t know how I found your site but want to say that I love it! My family is coming to Japan in August and reading your information is very helpful to me. Thanks.
Chris B - I am unsure of this pwnage you mention, please send pictures and a case of beer as evidence. I live in Fukuoka, near Family Mart. Thanks.
Linda - I’m glad you like the site! I see you’re heading to Tokyo… skyauction to the rescue! I’m sure you’ll have a blast! Believe it or not, I haven’t been to Tokyo yet, but feel free to ask me any questions you might have about Japan and I’ll answer what I can.
